BFIS Insurance Market Study Programmes:

Short, intensive ‘intro-to-insurance’ intern programmes for students who have completed at least one year of university education and are interested in learning more about the insurance industry. 

Teams of four students spend two or three weeks in either Atlanta, Bermuda, Chicago or London. They will meet insurance professionals and learn about the various careers in insurance.

BFIS awards $322,500 in scholarships to 13 students

Following scholarship interviews in July, The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) awarded a total of $322,500 in scholarship funding to 13 students focused on careers in Bermuda’s insurance sector. The total amount of funding that the Foundation has awarded since the charity was founded in 1996 now stands at over $7 million, all funded by the insurance industry.

Another successful BFIS “Intro-to-Insurance” programme concludes

On Monday, July 29th, 14 of this year’s 16 BFIS Interns gave presentations to over 50 insurance professionals, former interns and BFIS scholars on what they had learned during immersion in the insurance markets of Atlanta, Bermuda, Chicago and London this summer.

The Intro-to-Insurance programmes are short but
intensive (Bermuda – 3 weeks, Atlanta, Chicago and London – 2 weeks) and give
the four teams of university students, who ranged this year from sophomores to
graduates, the opportunity to learn what the insurance industry is all about
and the careers that would suit their goals.

2019 BFIS Interns get off to a great start

The BFIS 2019 Bermuda Intro-to-Insurance Internships kicked off last
week when a group of 4 Bermuda students and 2 students from the Katie School of
Insurance & Risk Management at Illinois State University began an intensive
3-week internship, with visits planned to over 30 re/insurance companies and
related organisations during that period.

The students thus far have enjoyed meeting with brokers, underwriters,
claims analysts, actuaries and lawyers, to name but a few.  One of the interns said what an amazing

BFIS Denim Day – March 8

Started in 2016 the BFIS Denim Day is a major initiative organised by the BFIS Alumni Committee to provide  an annual BFIS Alumni Scholarship worth $10,000 for a student with financial need who meets the BFIS Scholarship criteria.  Last year (2018) $12,643 was raised and we hope to increase this amount in 2019 with 24 companies and 2 schools participating!

Congratulations Nicholas!

At the Centre of Philanthropy’s 12th Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception, BFIS Alumni Committee Co-Chair Nicholas Butterfield was recognized for his dedication in helping to raise funds for the BFIS Alumni Scholarship during the past year.

At the reception held at Chubb, 50 organisations recognized 51 adults and 20 students who were congratulated by Deputy Governor Alison Crocket, Minister Lovita Foggo and COP Board Member Joel Schaefer.

Insurance Careers presentation – Saltus SGY2

BFIS insurance career presentations in local schools

The start of the school year has BFIS making presentations to senior year students in all the high schools, both public and private, to encourage students to see the possibilities of the myriad of careers within the insurance sector.

This year the newly-formed BFIS Schools Outreach Committee, who are almost all BFIS Alumni, has taken on this programme with members responsible for liaising directly with the career counselors of their former high-school.

BFIS Scholarship Recipients 2018

On Wednesday July 11, the Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies (BFIS) awarded $230,000 in scholarship funding to 10 students focused on careers in Bermuda’s insurance sector. This brings the total amount of funding that the Foundation has awarded since the charity was founded 22 years ago to nearly $6.5 million.
