BFIS awards $322,500 in scholarships to 13 students

Following scholarship interviews in July, The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) awarded a total of $322,500 in scholarship funding to 13 students focused on careers in Bermuda‚Äôs insurance sector. The total amount of funding that the Foundation has awarded since the charity was founded in 1996 now stands at over $7 million, all funded by the insurance industry.

The number of current BFIS scholars currently at college is 26, with a total funding commitment of $460,000.  We are proud to report that we have assisted 216 students with educational funding to date, with most alumni being employed in the insurance sector and related industries.

Unfortunately, we were unable to hold our usual Annual Awards Reception because of COVID. However, we were able to make an informal presentation to the students at the Anglican Cathedral on August 18th in between rainshowers!

BFIS Overseas Scholarships were awarded to: Freshmen Jordan Etemadi studying Economics at McGill University and Ryan Topple studying Business at Dalhousie University; Sophomores Katie Deane-Gray studying Business at Mt. Allison University and Jaiden Furbert-Jacobs studying Business at Penn State University; Juniors Brianna Correia studying Accounting at Bermuda College (MSVU Programme); Sachio Harrison studying Actuarial Science at St. Francis University and Chloe Powell studying Mathematics at Georgetown University.

Named scholarships, which BFIS administers on behalf of specific donor companies, were presented to: Cyana Burgess entering her senior year of Actuarial Science at Georgia State University - BFIS Alumni Association Scholarship (funded with money raised by BFIS Alumni mostly though their annual Denim Day); Shane White, a Sophomore studying Business at Aston University - BFIS Argo Group Scholarship; Naphisa Smith, a Sophomore studying Environmental Science at Nova SouthEastern University and Nasir Rudolph, a Freshman studying Marine Science at University of Miami - BFIS Aspen Scholarship; Nisha Smith, a Junior studying Actuarial Science at St. John's University - BFIS Athene Scholarship; and Kelly Trott, a Freshman studying Information Technology at Framingham State University - BFIS Alan Peacock Colonial Group Scholarship.

We greatly appreciate all our donor companies, without whose support we simply would not be able to provide scholarships. We are also most grateful to our Board, Trustees, Committees and the many professionals who volunteer their time.
