Established by leaders of Bermuda's insurance industry in 1996, BFIS is tasked with ensuring that Bermudian students are provided with opportunities to attain the education and training necessary for careers in Bermuda's insurance industry.
This is being achieved through scholarships, mentoring, internships and career guidance.

BFIS was established in 1996 by leading insurance company executives who realised that as the insurance industry in Bermuda grew, they needed to ensure that young Bermudians would have the education and skills to enter the industry. They agreed that this could be achieved through educational financial support, mentoring, and meaningful vacation jobs in insurance.
BFIS has now awarded over $3 million in scholarships; we have an ever-expanding mentor network; our summer ‘intro-to-insurance’ programme is now held in three locations; and our career information and employment guidance programmes have benefited many hundreds of students, graduates and career-changers.
These programmes are continue to be supported through annual pledges and donations from the insurance sector as well as those companies that benefit from doing business for the insurance sector.
In this, our 15th year of operation, we have given ourselves the goal of raising $1.5 million which will be restricted to the funding of scholarships, as that is where we see an increasing need due to the rapidly rising number of applications plus the cost of university tuition has more than doubled since 1996. .
We are grateful for every single donation, whether large or small, and as the majority of our funding has been donated as annual pledge payments over periods from 2 – 5 years ranging from $500 to $50,000 a year we have developed the chart below to show how our donors can help us reach our 15th Anniversary goal.
| Donors | Annual Donation | Years Pledged | Total Donation | Combined Donations | Help BFIS reach our 15th Anniversary Year Goal! |
