The CPCU Society Annual Meeting Student Program provides opportunities for risk management, insurance and actuarial science juniors, seniors and graduate students to experience first hand the benefits of attending the Society’s prestigious yearly conclave. The 2012 CPCU Annual Meeting will take place in Washington, DC in September 8 -11 and the Bermuda CPCU Chapter have one guaranteed spot for a Bermudian student.
Renaissance Reinsurance is again offering to sponsor 5 Bermuda College students to attend the Reinsurance Association of America ReUnderwriting 2-day seminar being held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on March 20-21, 2012. Students who recently graduated university and have not yet entered the insurance industry can also apply.
HSBC representatives from Human Resources and the Graduate Development Programme have started their annual Student Recruitment Roadshow. The next stop is on February 3rd, HSBC will host a student dinner in London, Ontario, home of the University of Western Ontario. Interviews will take place on February 3rd and 4th.

Another group of high school students who signed up at the BFIS Careers Fair booth to learn more about careers in accounting were treated to a lunch n’ learn by PWC on Tuesday, Dec.13.
At the recent Careers Fair in October a number of high school students who were interested in insurance careers signed up at the BFIS booth to learn more about underwriting and Last Monday, December 12, they were treated to a lunch n’ learn by Renaissance Re.
In his report to the Annual General Meeting of The Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies (BFIS) on December 5, 2011, Michael Fisher, BFIS Chairman said “I am extremely proud to acknowledge that BFIS has awarded scholarships to 108 students since our inception and that of the 78 graduates to date almost all are working in the industry.

Each year, there is one Scholarship available in Bermuda to enable an outstanding student – chosen on the basis of exceptional intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service – to study at the University of Oxford. The first Rhodes Scholar from Bermuda was selected to come to Oxford in 1904, and since that time nearly 100 students from Bermuda have been awarded this prestigious scholarship. Applications (for undergraduate students aged between 19 and 25 who have completed at least 3 years of their degree studies) for the 2012 Scholarship have now opened and will close on 21 October 2011.

Having interviewed 30 out of the 101 applicants for the 2011 BFIS scholarship awards, the Scholarship Committee is now in the process of deciding who will be awarded a scholarship. Students will be notified at the end of next week (July1).

BFIS Overseas Scholarships are $25,000 a year for 2 years - open to all undergraduate and post-graduate years. The BFIS Signature Scholarship is worth $30,000 a year for up to 4 years open to undergraduates.

Hiscox Bermuda are searching for two Bermudians who will be graduating this summer (or who graduated in 2009 or 2010). This year they are looking to hire an Underwriting Trainee and an Operations Trainee.
BFIS Scholar, Robbie Maycock, sent this update having just finished a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro with the organization Mountains for Moms (www.mountainsformoms.org). “We hiked with the intent of raising awareness for our cause, Obstetric Fistula, alongside our fund raising efforts. The ascent to the summit, at 19,340 feet, was perhaps the most testing challenge of my life, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.
