Meeting a Need

Established by leaders of Bermuda's insurance industry in 1996, BFIS is tasked with ensuring that Bermudian students are provided with opportunities to attain the education and training necessary for careers in Bermuda's insurance industry.

This is being achieved through scholarships, mentoring, internships and career guidance.

Chicago Intern Program starts

Akira Robinson, Ashley Madeiros, Derek Pailing and Kiara Somner start their intensive 2 week ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ today. They’ll be visiting Zurich, Allied World, Swiss Re, Hinkhouse Williams Walsh LLP, ACE USA, Aon, Travellers, Chartis, Arch Insurance and Gen Re.
They will be learning many aspects of the industry including:
- The submission process, either a renewal or new business submission that we receive from a broker and the step by step accelerated underwriting process.
- An overview of primary casualty including loss sensitive programs, Defense Based Act coverage and property coverage and modeling in critical cat zones.
- Casualty Facultative Reinsurance – Auto Liability, General Liability, Work Comp, Structures, Clients & Competitors perspectives.
- Exposure to various sides of the business (Property, casualty, excess, claims and marketing) to give the “big picture” perspective.
- Job shadowing with a Management Liability broker.
- Commercial Underwriting of bond and financial products, middle market, technology, global, inland marine, construction.
- Sessions with various underwriting divisions including Construction, Executive Liability, Property, Primary Casualty & Excess Casualty.
- Looking at insurance from a lawyer’s perspective.

It’s not all work – they are being taken out to dinner and a Cub’s game and are going on the Insurance Associates boat cruise!
